Dill 'Dukat'(Anethum graveolens 'Dukat') Herb Seeds

With fine frond like leaves, Dill can be a majestic addition to a herb garden and its proportions make it an architectural plant in the border. Producing a single upright hollow stem, Dill will also produce umbels of tiny yellow flowers which appear in the summer, and these become seed heads in time. Dill exhibits  blue-green leaves and is slow to bolt, thus giving longer leaf production. A crop that needs successive sowings to ensure continued leaf supply, Dill requires a warm, sunny position sheltered from wind, as it grows to be 60-150 cm tall, and may need to be staked. Dill thrives when kept moist, as it dislikes being dry.

Growing Instructions

Sow 4-6 seeds into a single pot or per module cell. Cover seed with vermiculite. Maintain 19'C. Germination takes 2-4 weeks. Plant out when large enough to handle. Dill does not like having its roots being disturbed or being transplanted, so you can also sow in-situ where it is to grow. You can start dill off from seed anytime between April and July. Prepare the soil well, choosing a fertile, open site in full sun. Sow seeds thinly in shallow, 1cm (½in) deep, rows and cover lightly with soil. Thin seedlings when large enough to handle to 15cm (6in) apart.

Herb Usage

An excellent accompaniment to fish and potatoes, Dill or Anethum graveolens ''Dukat' is an aromatic fine leaved herb used extensively in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

Dill seeds are also important culinary additions, as the flavour is more pungent then the leaf, which provides a more subdued flavour to a dish. Dill seed is used in pickling, particularly cucumbers, gherkins and cauliflower, and features in vinaigrette's and marinades.
