Pale Purple Coneflower (Echinacea pallida) Herb in 1L Pot

Echinacea pallida is also known as a cone flower it has a narrow leaf, and sports a pale purple coneflower in summer. The Cone Flower's are daisy-like, conical and a pale purple colour the petals of the pallida variety are thinner and droop downwards away from the cone making an attractive alternative to other varieties and great if you want a collection of a few Echinaceas throughout your planting scheme. The flowers have a scent of honey they are very attractive to butterflies and bees and makes an extremely attractive cut flower. It is a beautiful perennial plant this Echinacea variety is perfect for the summer flower border, prairie style planting or the dry garden. It is drought tolerant, although water in the first year until established and prefers full sun and a free-draining hummus rich soil. If you cut back the stems as the flowers fade it can encourage a second flush of flowers or if you prefer they can be left in place as they can look attractive as dried seed heads.

Echinacea pallida or Pale Purple coneflower is also grown for the roots and rhizomes, which are lifted in autumn and used in healing preparations. Echinacea angustifolia is native to North America and has long been used by native Americans as wound-herbs, it was the plant traditionally used in herbal medicine although today the 'pupurea' and pallida varoeties are also used in herbal medicine as the extract of which is said to ward off the common cold and flu by boosting the immune system. It is said to have antiviral, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.
