Anise - Pimpinella anisum

Type: Annual

Anise is a flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region as well as Southwest Asia. It is known for its flavor, which is similar to liquorice, fennel and aniseed.

Pimpinella anisum plants grow best in light, fertile, well drained soil, and the seeds should be planted as soon as the ground warms up in spring. The young plants do not transplant well after being established, as they develop a taproot, so they should be planted in situ.

This annual can grow to be 3ft tall, and produces dense heads of white flowers in the summer, which ripen into seeds. These seeds are the crop of the plant and whole or ground, are used in a wide variety of products. Anise is sweet and very aromatic, distinguished by its liquorice-like flavor.
