Basil Bush - Ocimum minimum
Type: Annual
Originating in warm tropical regions, Basil has become synonymous with the Mediterranean region, where the hot sunny climate allows it to thrive. It does not do well outdoors in cool Summers.
Ocimum minimum is a dwarf-growing variety that is used for the same purposes as sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum), i.e. traditional pesto, either as a garnish or to add freshness to pasta, salads and chicken dishes. Basil is an ideal partner to tomatoes and tomato-based dishes, as its freshness complements the acidity and sweetness of a ripe tomato. Beans, peppers and aubergines are especially well dressed with Basil.
The basil family are most well known for their aromatic leaves, but the seeds of these plants are often soaked in water to make a refreshing drink.
Bush basil is a low, bushy plant, seldom growing taller than 6 inches in height, whose bright green leaves are oval, and produces white flowers in whorls towards the top of the branches.
Bush Basil is considered an annual in Britain, but can have its life extended if it is brought indoors when the weather cools. As a culinary herb, Basil needs to be cut to ensure continued leaf production, as if left to its own devices, will become woody.
Ideally grown in pots or containers.
