Basil Lemon - Ocimum x citriodorum
Type: Annual
Originating in warm tropical regions, Lemon Basil is a cross between O. americanum and O. basilicum, and grows from South East Asia to North East Africa. It thus thrives in a hot, sunny position, and does not do well outdoors in cool Summers.
A vigorous upright plant with grey green leaves and numerous stems, Lemon Basil is considered an annual in Britain, but can have its life extended if it is brought indoors when the weather cools. As a culinary herb, Lemon Basil produces both leaves and seeds, and thus it should be encouraged to flower for seed harvest. The seeds have a strong lemon scent and can be steeped in water to produce a lemon tonic. As a plant, it has a reputation for needing care and attention, but it is well worth the effort.
Use this aromatic herb with fish or chicken and it will add a lemony zing to salad dressings.
Ideally grown in pots or containers. Height: 30cm-45cm.
