Basil Sweet Genovese - Ocimum Basilicum 'Genovese'

Type: Annual

Originating in warm tropical regions, Basil has become synonymous with the Mediterranean region, where the hot sunny climate allows it to thrive. It does not do well outdoors in cool Summers.

The most widely grown variety,’ Ocimum basilicum’ or common Basil is a sweet variety, used in traditional pesto, this aromatic herb is ideal for cooking, either as a garnish or to add freshness to pasta, salads and chicken dishes.

Basil is an ideal partner to tomatoes and tomato-based dishes, as its freshness complements the acidity and sweetness of a ripe tomato. Beans, peppers and aubergines are especially well dressed with Basil.

Basil oil is a wonderful way to include this pungent herb in summer cooking, and can be added to vinaigrettes to bring the taste of summer to your plate.

The basil family are most well known for their aromatic leaves, but the seeds of these plants are often soaked in water to make a refreshing drink.

A vigorous upright plant with bright green leaves and numerous stems, Basil is considered an annual in Britain, but can have its life extended if it is brought indoors when the weather cools. As a culinary herb, Basil needs to be cut to ensure continued leaf production, as if left to its own devices, will become woody and produce small white flowers.

Ideally grown in pots or containers. Height: 30cm-60cm
