Bay - Laurus nobilis

Type: Perennial

The Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) is known by a variety of common names: Sweet Bay, Bay Tree, True Laurel, Grecian Laurel, Laurel Tree, or simply Laurel.

Laurus nobilis is native to the Mediterranean region, and an aromatic evergreen tree or large shrub with green, glossy leaves, often with a wrinkled margin. Creamy-yellow flowers clusters appear in spring, followed by a pair of small green fruits on each leaf stalk.

Bay can vary greatly in size and height, sometimes reaching 10m tall, although they do take well to being clipped to shape, and will be very happy in a container if kept well fed. Although Bay are frost hardy, youn plants do need protection in winter.

Preferring light, free-draining soil and a sunny sheltered position, the leaves of the Laurus nobilis are ideal for flavouring, marinades, casseroles and stews, and although the plant is relatively slow growing, no herb garden is complete without a bay tree.
