Bergamot, Cambridge Scarlet - Monarda bradburyana 'Cambridge Scarlet'

Type: Perennial

Monarda bradburyana 'Cambridge Scarlet ' or Bergamot 'Cambridge Scarlet' is a hardy perennial that will flourish in full sun or partial shade, and almost any soil type. Originally from North America, these beautiful plants are not out of place in the border, and they are very attractive to bees and butterflies.

Growing to a height of just under 1m, this clump-forming perennial produces rich scarlet flowers from mid-summer to early autumn. The foliage is aromatic, and leaves are sometimes picked for potpourri.

Used to make tea and flavour game, Bergamot has many uses, and as the leaves contain citronellol, they are also effective as an insect repellant.
