This delightful perennial is perhaps best known as a hedging or ornamental plant, as it's compact growing habit, tolerance of close shearing and scented foliage make is an ideal candidate for hedging and topiary.
Buxus sempervirens, also known as Common Box, European Box or as Boxwood, is native to Western and Southern Europe, Africa and the Mediterannean regions, and will flourish in remarkably diverse situations, and it will tolerate well-drained through to clay/heavy soils and will cope with acidic and chalky soil.
The Dwarf Box, or Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa' is synonomous with and knot gardens and low hedges, and once established, they will form a dense, evergreen screen of small, rounded, lustrous, dark green leaves. Ideally suited to a partially shady site, it's great for edging traditional herbaceous borders or even a vegetable garden. For maximum results plant 15cms apart in well-prepared, fertile soil and water regularly until well established.
