Germander Hedge - Teucrium x lucidrys

Type: Perennial

Hedge Germander is a shrubby, woody perennial with a spreading habit, that has been used in traditional knot gardens as it responds well to hard clipping in spring or autumn. Teucrium x lucidrys is originally from Europe and Southwest Asia, and although only reaching heights of 10-30cm, it is a fabulous addition to the garden for its attractive foliage and stunning flowers.

The lipped flowers are a mixture of pale pink to deep purple and are carried on long spikes in clusters in mid to late summer. The leaves are oval, shiny and green on top and hairy underneath. This is a plant for warm, well-drained lime-rich soil and eminently suitable for walls and rockeries.

This is a wonderful plant for bees and wasps.

Although Hedge Germander is reputed to have some medicinal properties, self medication is not recommended as ingestion can cause liver damage.
