Heartsease - Viola tricolor

Type: Perennial

Viola tricolor or Hartsease, is a delightful wild flower that can grow up to 12cm tall, and spread about the same, although once established Hartsease will self seed happily and naturalise an area of garden or wood in due time. 

Preferring light, well-drained soil and a partially sunny site, Hartsease will produce beautiful 3-petalled blooms in a variable pattern of purple, lavender and yellow, from April to September, giving an extended show of colour.

Viola tricolor has been traditionally used as a depurative, meaning that it has a non specific cleansing action which some believe to be beneficial in skin conditions like acne.
