Leopard's Bane - Arnica montana
Type: Perennial
Leopard's Bane or Arnica montana, is a perennial herb that has many common names, including 'leopard's bane', 'wolf's bane', 'mountain tobacco' and 'mountain arnica.' This herb produces pretty bright yellow, daisylike flowers in the Spring. Reaching a height of up to 2 feet, this easily cultivated plant also sports heart-shaped leaves with a toothed edge.
Leopard's bane prefers a good, well-drained soil in partial shade. Since their roots are shallow, they also benefit from a moist situation. These plants prefer cool summers. In hot climates, they must have some shade.
Since these flowers bloom in spring, they add a splash of colour early on, and thus make fine border plants when massed, and are beautiful in front of a low wall. They also make excellent cut flowers.
Arnica is said to be useful in relieving bruising, but one should not self medicate as ingestion of large quantitites of Arnica montana can cause gastrointestinal bleeding.
