Meadowsweet - Filipendula ulmaria

Type: Perennial

Meadowsweet or Filipendula ulmaria is a perennial herb often found growing in damp meadows, ditches and bogs, at the edges of ponds, on river banks and in damp open woodland. Common throughout Europe, it is also be found in the eastern US and Canada as far west as Ohio.

Meadowsweet is also known as 'Bridewort', 'Meadow Queen', Meadow-wort', Lady of the Meadow' and  'Meadsweet.' Preferring moist semi shade, Meadowsweet will colonise areas if left to its own devices.

Meadowsweet spreads with creeping rootstock, and will send up a reddish, angular stem, up to 120cm tall, that is branched near the top. Each branch holds pinnate green leaves that are downy white underneath. The small, creamy-white (sometimes even pink) five-petaled flowers are a stunning display, as they have over twenty protruding stamens, and these grow in clusters from June to August.
