Oregano, Compact - Origanum vulgare 'Compactum'
Type: Perennial
Compact Oregano or Origanum vulgare Compactum is an extremely aromatic dwarf herb, with dark green leaves and a mound forming nature. Its pungent flavour features heavily in Mediterannean and Mexican food, as it has a great affinity for a variety of foods, especially strong flavours like wine, olives and tomatoes, vegetables, stuffings and egg dishes.
Native to the Mediterannean and Southern Europe, Compact Oregano is closely related to marjoram, and is also characteristic of many Greek dishes (particularly lamb). Oregano's flavour is enhanced with drying and is oftne sprinkled liberally on pizzas.
Growing 15cm tall and preferring light well-drained soil, Oregano prefers a sunny site and does not particularly enjoy prolonged wet winters, but its hardy nature means can remain evergreen through the winter months. The bright green oval leaves grow profusely on short purple/brown stems, and a very pretty show of long stemmed pink-violet flowers appear in the summer (some varieties can have a white flower.)
