Oregano, Golden Curly - Origanum vulgare 'Aureum Crispum'

Type: Perennial

Curly Golden Oregano or Origanum vulgare Aureum Crispum is an extremely aromatic herb that has wrinkled yellow-green leaves that look their best in Spring. The pungent flavour features heavily in Mediterannean and Mexican food, as it has a great affinity for a variety of foods, especially strong flavours like wine, olives and tomatoes, vegetables, stuffings and egg dishes.

Native to the Mediterannean and Southern Europe, Oregano is closely related to marjoram, and is also characteristic of many Greek dishes (particularly lamb). Oregano's flavour is enhanced with drying and is oftne sprinkled liberally on pizzas.

Growing 30cm tall and preferring light well-drained soil, Curly Golden Oregano prefers a sunny site and does not particularly enjoy prolonged wet winters, but its hardy nature means can remain evergreen through the winter months. The bright green oval leaves grow profusely on short purple/brown stems, and a very pretty show of purple-pink flowers appears in the summer (some varieties can have a white flower.)
