Purslane - Portulaca oleracea

Type: salad

Purslane or Portulaca oleracea is a native of Asia and Europe, and grows wild in large parts of the world. Growing to 30cm tall, this annual is an excellent herb, with a mild, sweet-sour flavour and a chewy texture. Its thick reddish stem creeps along the ground, and holds stalkless paddle shaped leaves about as long as a small paper clip.

Preferring light, sandy soil and a sunny site, Purslane will grow well from seed sown directly in Spring after the last frosts, and although a small yellow flowers appears in late summer, the leaves are the main harvest, and these need to be picked regularly to stimulate growth.

Purslane leaves and stems are great raw in salads. You can steam them or add them to soups, stews, and other vegetable dishes.
