Rocket Salad - Eruca vesicaria subsp. sativa

An extremely easy plant to grow from seed, Salad Rocket or Eruca vesicaria subsp. Sativa will provide a bountiful crop of leaves for the entire season if one stays on top of the picking, working as a cut and come again crop. The plant is happiest sown in situ, and can grow to heights of 60cm.
Known primarily as a salad herb, the leaves have a sharp peppery, mustard taste and are best picked before the flowers appear, as the leaves lose some of their pungency once the flower stalk arrives. The yellow flowers turn to white with a purple vein in the summer, and are also edible, added to salads or as a garnish.
Rocket prefers rich moist soil, and a shady situation, and seed can be sown directly in to prepared ground, where it will germinate and be ready to pick in 6 to 8 weeks. Rotation planting is important for constant leaf supply.
he sharp taste of the leaves make it an excellent addition to a sandwich, and is even added as a topping to pizza.
