St Johns Wort - Hypericum perforatum

Type: Perennial

Hypericum perforatum or St John's Wort is a yellow-flowering perennial herb that is indigenous to Europe, but which has been introduced to many temperate areas of the world and grows wild in many meadows. The common name comes from its traditional flowering and harvesting on St John's day, which is the 24th of June.

St Johns Wort is best known as a treatment for depression, but is also cultivated as a garden plant.

As St Johns Wort has extensive, creeping rhizomes, it can spread quickly so needs to be well maintained. Its stems are upright and branched, and can grow up to 1m tall, holding stalkless, narrow, oblong leaves which are yellow-green in color, with transparent dots throughout the tissue.

In Spring and summer, Hypericum perforatum will produce very pretty five petalled flowers that are a bright yellow with conspicuous black dots.
