Bush Basil has distinctive miniature pointed leaves on a compact growing plant. This is the Basil you find in the Med when you are on holiday! Originating in warm tropical regions, Basil has become synonymous with the Mediterranean, where the hot sunny climate allows it to thrive. It does not do well outdoors in cool Summers. Basil is considered an annual in Britain, but can have its life extended if it is brought indoors when the weather cools. As a culinary herb, Basil needs to be cut to ensure continued leaf production, as if left to its own devices, will become woody and produce small white flowers, remove flowers as soon as they begin to appear to avoid the plant running to seed.

Growing Instructions

Sow seeds into pots of free-draining seed compost from late spring in a greenhouse or sunny windowsill. Protect seedlings from slugs and cold and keep well-watered as they grow. Plant out into the herb garden or pots from early summer, once all threat of frost has passed, allowing 15-20cm between plants. To encourage lots of fresh young leaves pick plants over regularly and remove any developing flower-heads immediately to prevent running to seed (bolting).

Used in traditional pesto, this aromatic herb is ideal for cooking, either as a garnish or to add freshness to pasta, salads and chicken dishes.
