Primrose (Primula vulgaris) Herb in 9cm Pot

The Primrose is a very pretty herbaceous or semi-evergreen perennial. The Primrose is a clump forming perennial that forms a basal rosette of simple leaves, with salver-shaped or bell-shaped flowers of a very pretty pale yellow flower produced in late winter and early spring, When they appear it is a a real sign that Spring is on the way!

A woodland plant which enjoys moist but well-draining soil in sun or partial shade. Growing to about 10cm, they will colonise a small area if left and do respond well to being divided regularly to increase numbers and plant strength. They can be grown biennials for bedding in flower borders, used  in a container, or planted in a woodland garden, rock garden or naturalised in grass, such as in an informal Garden, Wildflower meadow or a Wildlife Garden. Primula favour a sheltered position in sun or partial shade.

Primula Vulgaris provides an early source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators, and is used as a caterpillar food plant by several species of moth.

Herb Usage

The leaves and flowers of the Primrose are edible, and have a very long history of medicinal use. The common primrose is chiefly grown as an ornamental plant, but in the past the Primrose was considered an important remedy in muscular rheumatism, paralysis and gout and an ointment can be made from the plant and used for treating skin wounds. The flowers were once made into a wine and can be crystallised for cake decoration.
