Tangerine Sage or Salvia elegans Tangerine is a perennial herb that can grow up to 60cm tall. Originating from the mountain regions of Central America, and thus preferring wamer climates than we traditionally experience in the UK, Pineapple Sage can still thrive here if given protection from cold and excessive wet in the winter.
Once established in well-drained soil in a sunny site, Pineapple Sage will put on a show of bright red trumpet-shaped flowers in summer. The leaves are small and oval shaped, and have a wonderful scent of tangerine. Once hit by frost, the plant will die back, and come up again the following spring.
Can be an excellent container plant, as bringing in from the cold will extend the flowering period.
