Betony (Stachys Officinalis) Herb  in 1Litre Plot

Stachys Officinalis  is also known as Betonica officinalis or Stachys betonica and its other common name is  Bishops wort, Betony is an attractive slow growing erect perennial plant that has beautiful foliage in the form of deeply veined leaves. This delightful border plant is ideally situated in damp soil in sun or partial shade, and will flower from July to September, showing spikes of bright magenta flowers.

Fully hardy and growing to a height of  up to 60cm. It is a native wild flower of open woodland and as such Betony prefers to grow in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade & does not like to have wet feet in winter.

Herb Usage

Betony was believed to be a powerful herb by the Romans they believed it to be effective against sorcery.  The anglo Saxons believed it would ward off nightmares and it was even planted in churchyards to prevent visitations by ghosts! Herbalists once used Betony as a remedy for arthritis and and gout. It was also claimed to be effective against snake and dog bites, and it was even believed to be a cure for drunkenness - don't try that at home !

It has also been used in the past for for treatment of disorders of the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, nervous system, skin and gynecological problems. Modern herbalists still use Betony to treat anxiety, gallstones, heartburn, high blood pressure, migraine and neuralgia, and to prevent sweating.
