Golden Hops or, Humulus lupulus 'Aureus' is a hardy perennial climber that can attain heights of 6m, and will take particularly well to being trained up arches, fences or lattices, forming a very attractive display of golden colour in the summer. The plant will die away in the winter.
The word 'hops' actually refers to the female plant's flowers, which are large decorative cone-like heads, and these are harvested in mid to late summer. The male plant also produces yellow flowers in a small cluster, but these are not as showy as its female counterpart.
Preferring rich, moist but well drained soil, hops will flourish in a sunny situation.
Hops are best known for their part in the production of beer, and the particular yeasty aroma they produce when harvested. The hop flowers promote soothing sleep, and have been stuffed into herb pillows or made into decorative garlands.
Our potted Golden Hop herb plants are generally available to buy online between March and September.
