Savory Summer - Satureja hortensis
Type: Annual
An annual, growing to 20-30cm, this bushy plant with dense pointed leaves, is also known as “beanplant” as it is a natural accompaniment to beans, reducing flatulence. Having a pungent aroma, Summer savory can be used as a salt and pepper replacement, and is excellent added to oils and vinegars, as it is a strong flavour on its own.
Producing lilac and white flowers in the summer, Satureja hortensis is an attractive rambling plant that enjoys well-drained soil and a sheltered position, and frequent picking will help keep the plant from becoming leggy. Summer savory can quite happily survive in a container, providing a pretty and fragranced plant, and used as a tea, infused with hot water, it is reputed to stimulate appetite and ease indigestion and flatulence.
