Red Creeping Thyme (Thymus serpyllum coccineus)Herb in 9cm Pot

Thyme is grown the world over as it is such a versatile plant, not only is its foliage is attractive, the flowers are long-lasting and very pretty, and it is drought tolerant - an overall easy-care plant. On top of that it is one of the most useful herbs for the kitchen.

Red Creeping Thyme reaches a maximum height of 5-7 cm and with its small green leaves and bright red pink flowers on long stems up to 3" long which appear in May and June it is very decorative. It has small green aromatic leaves which are evergreen given the right conditions, this creeping thyme is suitable for planting in the rock garden, herb garden or the front of a border, or perhaps plant between pavers or at the edge of gravel paths as the aromatic leaves release a lovely scent when trodden on. Red Creeping Thyme likes a well-drained light soil, which should not be too rich in nutrients as this will only encourage the plant to grow 'leggy' and lose its compact shape, also ensure that the plant is cut back after flowering again to help maintain shape. Being a native of the Mediterranean it needs a place in full sun.

Herb Usage

Red Creeping Thyme is an excellent herb for brightening up a herb garden as edging or as a feature plant, it is extensively used as a path thyme between flag stones and within turf. It is often found on rockeries as it is more decorative than culinary.

My wife and I have both ordered plants independently from HooksGreen Herbs over the past 6 months and have received excellent service, top quality plants being despatched without fuss and arriving in good condition. HooksGreen Herbs is now our number one destination when sourcing herb plants. Highly recommended. Thank you. Nick Battey
