This herb has a fabulous smell and is a worthy addition to the herb garden. With an upright habit, Origanum majorana produces highly aromatic downy, round, pale grey-green leaves, and can grow to 30cm squared.
Sow this very fine seed in the spring in modules, and do not cover. Keep on the dry side during germination. Once large enough, plant out into a site with well-drained soil, or Marjorum can be planted in containers where it will thrive if it is trimmed regularly to encourage new growth and keep a good shape.
Also known as Knotted Marjorum or Knot Marjorum, small knots of white flowers are produced in Summer.
Used in culinary dishes especially Mediterannean style food, sweet Marjorum has a much more delicate flavour than oregano, and is one of the main constituents of Bouquet Garni. Sweet Marjoram is used extensively in tomato dishes, and is a main constituent in the commercial production of Pizzas. The leaf is good for drying, as it retains a lot of its scent and flavour.
