Marjoram 'Compact' is a lovely low-growing plant, it is a semi-evergreen herb which has a wonderful fragrance. Compact Marjoram thrives in dry, well drained soil, as it is native to the Mediterranean, and is hardier in a sheltered position.
With hairy stems and bright green pointed leaves, Compact Marjoram is an attractive plant for the herb garden, and is a must in any culinary garden. Pale pink flowers are produced in the late summer and are very attractive to bees. This attractive plant will grow to 20cm and cover an area of 60cm, ideal for pathways and low growing coverage, for the front of a border in your herb garden or herbaceous border, a rock or gravel garden, it's also happy in a container.
Used in culinary dishes especially Mediterranean style food, Compact Marjoram has a much more delicate flavour than its close relation oregano the leaves of which are more likely to be dried and stored. Compact Marjoram is used extensively in Greek and Italian meat dishes, soups, stuffings, tomato sauces and pasta, the leaves are generally used fresh where they are best used towards the end of the cooking process. Leaves can also be used to flavour oil and vinegar. The entire plant can be harvested for oils and the pungent aromatic nature of it has a warming antiseptic property.
