A lovely low-growing plant, Compact marjoram or Origanum onites, is a semi evergreen herb which has a wonderful fragrance. Used particularly in Italian cooking, oregano is the fragrant addition to Pizza which gives it that aromatic authentic taste. Also found extensively in Greek and Mexican food. Like its close relative Oregano,it thrives in dry, well drained soil, as it is native to the Mediterranean, and is hardier in a sheltered position.
With hairy stems and bright green pointed leaves, Compact marjoram is an attractive plant for the herb garden, and is a must in any culinary garden. The pale pink flowers are produced in the late summer and are very attractive to bees. The entire plant can be harvested for oils and the pungent aromatic nature of it has a warming antiseptic property.
This attractive plant will grow to 20cm and cover an area of 60cm, ideal for pathways and low growing coverage.
