Oregano is an extremely aromatic green herb, native to the Mediterannean and Southern Europe, Oregano is closely related to marjoram. Growing 45-60cm tall and preferring light well-drained soil, Oregano prefers a sunny site and does not particularly enjoy prolonged wet winters, but its hardy nature means can remain evergreen through the winter months. The bright green oval leaves grow profusely on short purple/brown stems, and a very pretty show of purple-pink flowers appears in the summer (some varieties can have a white flower.)
A pungent flavour featureing heavily in Mediterannean and Mexican food, it has a great affinity for a variety of foods, especially strong flavours like wine, olives and tomatoes, vegetables, stuffings and egg dishes. It is also characteristic of many Greek dishes (particularly lamb). Oregano's flavour is enhanced with drying and is often sprinkled liberally on pizzas.
Our potted Oregano herb plants are generally availiable to buy online between March and September.
