Angelica Archangel (Angelica archangelica) Herb Seeds

Angelica Archangel is a biennial plant that is a fabulous addition to any border as it has bright green foliage and flower buds  which are green and contrast nicely with its pink stems, before opening to reveal yellow flowers held in flat umbels  from June - September The foliage and hollow grooved stems have a faint aniseed odor. Angelica archangelica, commonly known as Garden Angelica, Holy Ghost, Wild Celery, and Norwegian angelica, is a biennial plant that is becoming more and more fashionable in the garden and is a graceful plant in any situation.

Angelica Archangel is a large architecturally stunning plant that can reach 1.5M tall,  Angelica is an interesting addition to the herb garden, but it will also take its place at the back of the border too, providing height and interest into the autumn if the seed pods are left and these can be dried too for display. They are best sited in a full sun position, but will take some shade, and prefer moist soil.  Often short-lived, it will usually die back after flowering, but will self-seed freely if the conditions are favourable.

Due to the size of the plant and leaves, Angelica can be windblown, so may need staking once it has reached full size.

Growing Instructions

Sow in pots or in a seed tray outside to be planted out August-September cover seed with vermiculite. Maintain min 15'C. Germination 14-21 days. Keep moist. . Transplant when young and big enough to handle as older plants do not like being moved, or Sow May-June directly in to the garden.

Herb Usage

Angelica Archangel is found in the Northern regions of Denmark, Iceland and Scandinavia, Angelica is used here to flavour local aquavits, and elsewhere it is used in the production of candied cake decoration.  Can be used as a natural sweetener, chop the stems and add this to rhubarb to reduce the need for so much sugar. It has also been used as a digestive stimulant in the past.

The quality of the herb plants was superb and too soon to tell re the seeds but I'm sure they will be fine. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from Hook Green herbs again
