Dahurian Angelica, Bai Zhi or Chinese Angelica as it is sometimes known is an upright perennial herb that is becoming more and more fashionable in the garden. A large, architecturally stunning plant that can reach 1 - 2 meters tall, this interesting addition to the herb garden is best sited in a full sun, but it will take some shade, and prefers moist soil. It has large rounded umbels of green to white flowers.
Due to the height and size of the leaves, Angelica can be windblown, so may need staking once it has reached full size. Producing a large head of flowers in July & August, Angelica is a graceful plant in any situation.
Herb Usage
Dahurian Angelica has been used for centuries and is recorded to have been in use in Ancient China as early as 400 BC. Bai Zhi as it is known is China is reputed to be a herb that will purge the body of any negative influences. Today, the roots are used to treat headaches, nasal congestion, as a pain reliever, an anti-inflammatory, a laxative, a sedative, as an anti-fungal cream for skin and for treating swollen gums and toothaches.
The stalks of this plant have also been commonly used as a food ingredient. The stems have been made into decorative items, classically it is crystallised and is bright green and used in cakes. The seeds are often used as a seasoning in food too.
