This interesting herb has a wonderful lemon aroma and is used extensively in Eastern cooking.
Prefers well drained soil in full sun. It is not hardy keep the plants in a frost-free environment in winter where temperatures do not fall below 8°C -. Best grown in a container, so it can be moved into a sheltered position over winter it makes an excellent conservatory plant, where it will produce long lance shaped leaves, looking very like grass. It does not produce flowers.
A must have for Thai cuisine Stems are cut at root level and the lower 7-10 cm are used as a fresh herb. Lemongrass is also used as an essential oil in aromatherapy and homeopathic studies show that Cymbopogon citratus possesses various attributes such as anti-amoebic, antibacterial, antidiarrheal, antifilarial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. The dried leaves can be used in pot-pourri. It can even be used to help repel insects from the patio in summer. citronella is obtained from the leaves of some varieties of lemongrass.
