Sweet Rocket 'Purple' (Hesperis matronalis'Purple')Herb in 9cm Pot

Sweet Rocket has a myriad of other common names which include 'Dame’s Rocket', 'Damask Violet', 'Dame’s Gilliflower', 'Night Scented Gilliflower' and 'Summer Lilac.'

A stunning biennial that can grow to 90 cm, it has lush green lance-shaped leaves and will send up masses of mauve scented flowers in May and June, which are very attractive to bees and are a good food plant for the Orange Tip Butterfly. The scent from the flower clusters gets stronger as night falls and is sweet, similar to that of a violet.

Preferring full sun or partial shade, Sweet Rocket is a wonderful addition to the cottage garden or herbaceous border, they will self-seed and will gradually naturalise over an area it looks good when allowed to drift through an informal border or in a wildlife friendly scheme.

Herb Usage

Although once this plant would have been found in the apothecary garden and was mentioned by Culpeper as a 'good wound-herb'. In Medieval times the the seeds were steeped in vinegar and were considered good antidotes for insect stings and snake bites, or apparently to get rid of freckles!  The plant is grown today purely for its wonderful scented flowers.

    Recent Purchase

Posted by Lorraine Stocking on 1st Apr 2021

Apprehensively purchased two Hesperis plants online. Previously been disappointed by plants purchased from online suppliers. Was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the plants when they arrived. They were dispatched quickly & packaged well to protect them in transit. Won't hesitate to purchase from this company again. Thanks

    Lovely healthy plants

I ordered these and some white plants too. Would recommend Hooksgreen Herbs. Plants arrived safely, protectively packed and are now thriving in the garden, hoping to keep rabbits and deer away from them.

    Just what I wanted

    Posted by ad.hd@btinternet.com on 23rd May 2018

I needed plants light and frothy to complete my herbaceous border that is done in blue mauve pink and white. The bonus is that they will self seed and link in with The more beefy plants giving me the most perfect harmony and transition.
