Hypericum perforatum or St John's Wort is a yellow-flowering perennial herb that is indigenous to Europe, but which has been introduced to many temperate areas of the world and grows wild in many meadows. The common name comes from its traditional flowering and harvesting on St John's day, which is the 24th of June.
As St Johns Wort has extensive, creeping rhizomes, it can spread quickly so needs to be well maintained. It's stems are upright and branched, and can grow up to 1m tall, holding stalkless, narrow, oblong leaves which are yellow-green in colour, these have transparent dots throughout the tissue hence the perforatum part of its name.
In Spring and summer, St John's wort will produce very pretty five petalled flowers that are showy and bright yellow with black dots, these are sometimes followed by black berry-like fruits which should not be eaten.
St Johns Wort is best known as a herbal suppliment used as a treatment for depression, but is also cultivated as a garden plant.
Our potted St Johns Wort herb plants are generally available to buy online between March and September
