Leonurus cardiaca (Motherwort )Herb in 1Litre Pot

Motherwort is an upright prickly bush that can grow up to 1.2m tall and a width of 60cm. Producing pale pink to purple flowers, in whorls of 6 to 12, these are a striking addition to the garden. With deeply lobed dark green leaves, this plant will flower in late June to August.

Fully hardy, it prefers a moist well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. The flowers produce nectar in abundance which makes them very attractive to bees, so good for a wildlife garden too. It is related to mint so care should be taken t prevent the spread of the plant if it is not wanted.

Herb Usage

Motherwort has been used as a herbal remedy for centuries. The English common name “motherwort” refers to the herb’s value for women´s related health issues, especially when it is in connection with childbirth and menstrual problems. An extract of motherwort has been used to treat cardiac complaints, such as rapid heartbeat and is also said to treat insomnia and can calm anxiety. The flowering tops of the plant have also been used to flavour beer and stout.
