£6.99

Some Herbs may be too tall for our standard packaging and will be trimmed to fit. This will not be detrimental to the plant but will mean that these herbs will flower later in the year.

The Blister packs used to protect our beautiful herbs during transit are made from 100% recycled plastic and can be recycled kerbside.

Lovage (Levisticum officinale) Herb in 1L Pot

Lovage or Levisticum officinale is a beautiful perennial herb belonging to the Umbelliferae, the same family as angelica and carrot.

A tall addition to the herb garden, lovage is often placed at the back of the herbaceous border. Hollow stems are covered with the dark green leaves that look a bit like coarse celery. During June and July, an ornamental umbel of greeny yellow flowers appear, with a similar appearance to parsnip and fennel.

Although Lovage has been grown in English gardens and Monastery gardens for hundreds of years, it is not a native plant, as it originates in the Mediterranean. Growing in most soil types, but preferring rich moist well-drained soils, Lovage also prefers sun or partial shade. Levisticum officinale reaches 1.5-2m (5-6ft) in height during the early summer but dies right back in the winter.

Herb Usage

Lovage was used in ancient times as a herbal remedy for sore throats as well as an aphrodisiac,  and the leaves are still used today to add flavour to sauces and soups. The seeds are baked into breads and biscuits and the roots and seeds have digestive properties, and are often included in herbal tinctures to aid stomach complaints.

Lovely, large plant with lots of stems and leaves. Arrived in good condition and has perked up even more now I've replanted it. Strong delicious flavour, I like to make soup with it and put it in cheese toasties!
