Bergamot 'Blue Moon'(Monarda 'Blue Moon')Herb in 1 Litre Pot

Bergamot or Bee Balm as they are also known are a lovely addition to the border and 'Blue Moon' is a lovely example of this distinctive plant. This erect hardy perennial has green oval toothed leaves, that are highly scented giving off the unmistakable bergamot fragrance when crushed and will form a lovely compact bush in mid summer growing up to a height of 60cm. This is a fairly compact variety and has a plethora of lavender blue flowers in dense, textured daisy-like flowerheads . Great for a containers or planted en masse at the middle/front of a border for a stunning display of bold, showy blooms.

As the common name bee balm implies they will attract butterflies and bees to the garden in great numbers.

Preferring moist soil, Bergamot will flourish in full sun or partial shade, and almost any soil type but prefers free-draining soil or compost. These prairie plants will add vibrant colour to any border. Cut back in Autumn to ensure good growth in the spring. Plants can be divided in the Autumn every three years or so.

Herb Usage

Bergamot is probably most recognised as the flavouring for Earl Grey Tea, the leaves produce the same aroma and essential oils have been derived from the plant which are used for their calming effect. Used to make tea and flavour game, Bergamot has many uses, and as the leaves contain citronellol, they are also effective as an insect repellent. The foliage is aromatic, and leaves are sometimes picked for potpourri.
