Cretan Oregano also known as 'Shrimp oregano' as its flowers resemble a shrimp has tiny pretty pink flowers surrounded by grey, green bracts that turn deep pink as they mature in late summer. Aromatic round green leaves. Growing to approximately 20cm high. Does not like excessively wet conditions, so ideal to plant in a gravel garden or a pot, to fully appreciate its pretty floral display and pungent leaves. It is a frost hardy perennial.
As with all Oregano's, Cretan Oregano is an extremely aromatic herb. Generally oregano has a pungent flavour which features heavily in Mediterranean and Mexican food, as it has a great affinity for a variety of foods, especially strong flavours like wine, olives and tomatoes, vegetables, stuffing and egg dishes. This particular oregano is grown more for its decorative properties than for eating.
Out potted Cretan Oregano Herb plants are generally available to buy between March and September.
