Common Cowslip (Primula veris) Herb in 9cm Pot

This clump forming variety of primrose has the familiar ovate-oblong leaves and bears tall stems of small, deep yellow, wonderfully fragrant, orange marked flowers with cylindrical pale green calyxes in early spring. A wonderful splash of early colour makes this a must for the border or herb garden.

A woodland plant which enjoys moist but well-draining soil in sun or partial shade. Growing to about 10cm, they will colonise a small area if left and do respond well to being divided regularly to increase numbers and plant strength. They can be grown biennials for bedding in flower borders, used in a container, or planted in a woodland garden, rock garden or naturalised in grass, such as in an informal Garden, Wildflower meadow or a Wildlife Garden. Primula favour a sheltered position in sun or partial shade.

Primula veris provides an early source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators, and is used as a caterpillar food plant by several species of moth.

Herb Usage

The leaves and flowers of the Cowslip have a very long history of medicinal use. The Cowslip is chiefly grown as an ornamental plant, but in the past the Cowslip was considered an important remedy for swollen nose and throat, cough, bronchitis, trouble sleeping (insomnia), headache, hysteria and nerve pain (neuralgia). The flowers were once made into a wine and can be crystallised for cake decoration.
