Salad Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba) Herb in 9cm Pot
Salad Burnet or Poterium sanguisorba was formally known as Sanguisorba minor it is a perennial semi-evergreen plant that will provide abundant leaves for most of the year, and is a really lovely filler in the border with its unusual foliage and mildly flavoured leaves. Growing from 30cm to 1.1m tall, Salad Burnet prefers chalky moist fertile soil, and will tolerate sun or partial shade. Can be grown in a container or great for less formal settings such as wildflower meadows or wild gardens. It produces a mound of pinnate leaves and in the summer small globe shaped crimson fluffy flowers on tall stems that are very attractive to a wealth of insects. If you are growing this herb purely to harvest it's leaf, the flowering shoots must be removed quickly to maintain good leaf production, but can be grown to be an ornamental if you leave the attractive flower spikes on.
Salad burnet, is a perennial herb naturalised in Britain since the 16th Century. The leaves have a lovely mild taste similar to cucumber, and will add depth to salads, the leaves can also be added to summer drinks for a cucumber kick. Also try chopping into mayonnaise for a fresh flavour.
