Savory, Creeping (Satureja spicigera) Herb in 1Litre Pot

Creeping Savory, or Satureja spicigera is a frost hardy perennial that is similar to its shrubby cousin, Winter Savory, but will creep and form a small dense groundcover, reaching 8cm high and a spread of about 30cm. Creeping Savory is an attractive rambling plant that enjoys well-drained soil and a sheltered position, and frequent picking will help keep the plant from becoming leggy, treat as a rock plant and give sun and sharp drainage.

In the late summer, Creeping savory is covered in tiny white flowers that look enchanting against the bright green linear leaves, that have an aromatic pungency to them, as befits a Savory.

An excellent culinary herb, and a very pretty garden plant.

Herb Usage

Savory , Creeping  is similar in flavour to its cousin Winter Savory.  Like other savory's it is an excellent salt substitute. The fresh leaves have a strong spicy flavour and make an excellent accompaniment with bean stews and with meats, working especially well as a flavouring for chicken or turkey. The strong flavour of the leaves become much milder under prolonged cooking so to keep the flavour add the herb near the end of cooking. Chopped winter savory makes an excellent addition to Yorkshire pudding batters lifting the flavour of the dish. As a result it works wonderfully in toad-in-the-hole.

In modern times this herb is little used but for centuries it used to be a staple of many herb gardens. It was said to have antiseptic and digestive benefits. It has also been used as an expectorant and as a poultice for the treatment of bee stings or insect bites.

The truth is that it is so easy to grow and has a wonderful distinct flavour so there is no reason for you not to introduce it into your own garden.
