Teucrium marum(Cat Thyme) Herb Plant

Some Herbs may be too tall for our standard packaging and will be trimmed to fit. This will not be detrimental to the plant but will mean that these herbs will flower later in the year.

The Blister packs used to protect our beautiful herbs during transit are made from 100% recycled plastic and can be recycled kerbside.

Cat Thyme(Teucrium marum)Herb in 9cm Pot

Teucrium marum, better known as the cat thyme, is not a thyme at all but is is a close relative of germander. Its small, oval leaves give it a thyme-like appearance, but the musty scent is quite unlike the delicate aroma of thyme, cat thyme is a mound forming, tender perennial with grey-green leaves tipped by fragrant pink flowers in summer. it is known as Cat thyme as some cats prefer it to cat nip, but some will not like it at all. It has oval leaves, broader at the base, downy beneath, with uncut margins. It is in leaf all year. The flowers appearing between July and September, are magenta pint in colour.

Cat thyme is a native of Spain and the Western Mediterranean,  it will survive a winter when the frosts are not severe, though it will require some protection in more exposed areas. In cold areas it may drop its leaves but generally it is evergreen, it may require mulching around the roots in particularly cold/exposed sites to protect over-winter.

Herb Usage

The leaves and younger branches when fresh, on being rubbed emit a volatile, pungent, aromatic smell,  in taste they are somewhat bitter, accompanied with a sensation of heat. Cat thyme has been used medicinally for centuries. It was most often used to treat gallbladder or stomach disorders. When dried, the leaves cause sneezing so they were used as snuff and to treat “disorders of the mind”.

    Cat Thyme

Didn't realise this little plant existed until recently. I left the box in the living room and before I knew it the cats were straight on to it! Good strong little plants. Would buy again.

All three arrived looking very well, my cats actually found them when they were still in the packaging!

I am impressed, I have bought herb plants both on-line and from garden centers and I think these were probably some of the best I have had. It is too early to know how well they do, but if the cats' attention is anything to go by, I will probably have to re-purchase again later in the season, but not because of any problems with the plants!

Three healthy, beautiful Cat Thyme plants delivered to my door.

Posted by Geg Williams on 12th Sep 2018

I had previously vowed that I would never buy plants online again after a couple of disasters. However, not able to find this plant anywhere locally I decided to give it a go. Three beautifully packed, healthy, vigorous plants were delivered, very quickly, to my door. They have already grown and spread in the short time I have had them in my garden. I couldn't be more pleased.
