Wasabi or Japanese Horseradish (Wasabia japonica) Herb Plant in 1 Litre Pot
Wasabi or Japanese Horseradish with a degree of patience is a great plant to make a statement in a shady spot where other plants might struggle to thrive. It is a hardy Perennial meaning its leaves will die back in winter. Wasabi is Native to Japan where it grows in the mountains near river banks, so it will tolerate shade and damp and is it is perfectly happy in a less than perfect English Summer it will not enjoy full sun or drought conditions. Wasabi can tolerate temperatures down to -5 but if you are a particularly exposed area it may be a good idea to protect the crown of the plant with straw or fleece ensuring that it does not become waterlogged especially overwinter.
It may take a few years for a plant to establish into a large specimen it can grow up to approx. 60cm high given the right conditions. It has large green lily-pad shaped leaves and will flower between March and April and has delicate white flowers.
Once established the plant may have Rhizomes which you can harvest to make the world famous Japanese condiment! This may take a couple of years or more but in the meantime you can harvest the leaves or stems or even the flowers which are all edible and can certainly spice up a salad!
