English Mace or Sweet Nancy as this plant is also known is a very pretty full hardy perennial it has frothy aromatic light-green, finely divided, aromatic, upright foliage followed by flat clumps of tiny daisy-like cream flowers in July-August. It ideally likes full sun, or partial shade with free-draining soil or compost. Equally at home in the herb garden or herbaceous border or even in a pot on the patio where its fragrance can be enjoyed by all who brush past. Insects love it and it makes a great cut flower too.
The common name "yarrow" is normally applied to Achillea millefolium, but may also be used for other species within the genus, and they all look very similar in terms of leaf and flower shape. English Mace grows to a height and width of 60cm x 60cm it may be an idea to stake early in the season as it can flop in the wet.
In the Middle Ages English Mace was used as a strewing herb (i.e. was cut and thrown around the floor) to repel insects such as moths, lice and ticks and act as a medieval air freshener! The mild flavoured leaves can be used to flavour soups, stews and salads.
Our English Mace herb plants are generally available to buy online between March and September.
