Artemisia 'Powis Castle' is commonly known as Wormwood or Mugwort, and is a dwarf/low-growing semi-evergreen shrub, that has dramatic silver foliage presented as fine fern-like cut leaves. The flowers are fairly unimpressive, being outshone by the beautiful foliage, but they do appear in mid spring as a yellow splash of colour against the silver grey. As a plant, it is well suited to mixed borders, as well as the herb garden, and works well as a ground cover or rockery planting.
Artemisia prefers full sun and shelter where it will flourish, especially if the soil is dry but fertile, making it an ideal drought resisitant plant. It may need some protection in winter if you are in particularly cold area especially when the plant is young. This shrub is fast growing and requires cutting back in late autumn to keep a good shape. It does have a compact habit, ideally 60cm wide x 90cm high.
The flowers produce a scented blossom and the foliage is aromatic as well, making Artemisia a tough plant suitable for problem areas, as well as container growing.
Wormwood has been used therapeutically since ancient times. in fact its common name wormwood is thought to come form the belief that it could rid the body of harmful organisms. It is the main flavouring of the spirit 'Absinthe'. It was also used in the past as a digestive aid. Wormwood 'Powis Castle' has been developed to take full advantage of the foliage rather than any herbal use.
Our potted Wormwood 'Powis Castle' herb plants are generally available to buy online from March to September.
