Lemon Balm'All Gold'(Melissa officinalis 'All Gold') Herb in 1 litre Pot

Lemon Balm 'All Gold' is a perennial herb that is part of the mint family, it shares many characteristics with its cousin lemon balm, it too has lemon-scented leaves but it has a distinct gold foliage. Unlike it's lemon balm relation , whist being a useful and scented herb, it can be very invasive by seeding all over the garden. The gold variety is much more easily controlled, spreading to form a mound up to 45cm across but rarely self seeding. Originally from southern Europe and the Mediterranean region, it can grow up to 60cm-1m tall given the right conditions. 'All Gold'Lemon Balm will tolerate most soil types, but prefers a well-drained site in partial shade as, in summer especially the foliage will scorch if not protected from the midday sun. 'All-Gold Lemon balm is an excellent addition to the garden for its beautiful foliage alone. During the summer months it and has a small show of white flowers tinged with purple in summer that are full of nectar, which attract bees, hence the genus name Melissa (Greek for 'honey bee')

Herb Usage

Lemon Balm 'All Gold' has many uses, as a culinary herb it can be infused to make teas as well as flavouring ice-creams, it is also used as a herb for stuffing poultry. The addition of lemon balm will add a lemony zing to cooking in general, and is a useful addition to the herb garden. Harvest throughout the summer by snipping or pinching out the growing tips, it will keep regenerating all summer. Other uses include the leaves being crushed and rubbed onto the skin to repel insects.
