Pineapple-scented Sage 'Scarlet Pineapple'(Salvia elegans 'Scarlet Pineapple')Herb in 1 litre Pot
Pineapple-scented Sage 'Scarlet Pineapple' or 'Salvia rutilans' Salvia elegans Pineapple is a tender perennial herb that can grow up to 1m to 1.5m tall. Originating from the mountain regions of Central America, and thus preferring warmer climates than we traditionally experience in the UK, Pineapple Sage can still thrive here predominantly in the South of England if positioned in a sheltered, well-drained soil in a sunny site and given protection from cold and excessive wet in the winter to be on the safe side it really should be brought inside to overwinter, or take cuttings as a precaution. Elsewhere it makes a great container plant which can be moved under cover as bringing in from the cold before any risk of frost this will extend the flowering period. Pineapple Sage will put on a show of bright red trumpet-shaped flowers in June, July and August given the right conditions. The leaves are small and oval shaped, and have a wonderful scent of pineapple. Once hit by frost, the plant will die back, and providing it is given the right conditions for your area to protect from frost or over-wintering on a conservatory or similar it will come up again the following spring. Dead heading the old flowers will encourage new flowers.
