Pineapple-scented Sage 'Scarlet Pineapple'(Salvia elegans 'Scarlet Pineapple')Herb in 1 litre Pot

Pineapple-scented Sage 'Scarlet Pineapple' or 'Salvia rutilans'  Salvia elegans Pineapple is a tender perennial herb that can grow up to 1m to 1.5m tall. Originating from the mountain regions of Central America, and thus preferring warmer climates than we traditionally experience in the UK, Pineapple Sage can still thrive here predominantly in the South of England if positioned in a sheltered, well-drained soil in a sunny site and given protection from cold and excessive wet in the winter to be on the safe side it really should be brought inside to overwinter, or take cuttings as a precaution. Elsewhere it makes a great container plant which can be moved under cover as bringing in from the cold before any risk of frost this will extend the flowering period. Pineapple Sage will put on a show of bright red trumpet-shaped flowers in June, July and August given the right conditions.  The leaves are small and oval shaped, and have a wonderful scent of pineapple. Once hit by frost, the plant will die back, and providing it is given the right conditions for your area to protect from frost or over-wintering on a conservatory or similar it will come up again the following spring. Dead heading the old flowers will encourage new flowers.

Herb Usage

Sage has been used for centuries as a culinary herb, Pineapple-scented Sage 'Scarlet Pineapple' is grown as a tender perennial herb plant primarily for its flowers, which are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. However, the leaves and flowers can be used to flavour food and drinks. The leaves can be snipped into salads and the flowers make an attractive addition to a salad too. In addition the leaves add a herby pineapple taste to fruit drinks and cocktails or on their own make a refreshing tea.

Strong sturdy plants with good healthy growth on side stems. Survived delivery OK even though it looked like some rough treatment had occurred.

    Sad

Posted by Gillian Hewitt on 1st Apr 2020

My mother in law had read an article in her gardening magazine about pineapple sage, she's gardened for 50 + years and made enquiries on where she could get it from, she was advised Hooks and wrote to me to ask if I could make enquiries, I ordered one for her (along with another plant as a surprise) and she said the plant received was a sad looking plant and would need some tlc, I'm disappointed the I spent good money for the two plants and postage, hearing the feedback from a good fair lady

Glad to find a replacement for a plant I had a few years ago. It was well-packaged and arrived safely, and its now in the ground enjoying the weather. A good healthy specimen. Very pleased with all my purchases from Hooks Green Herbs.

    Lovely flowers, gorgeous leaf scent

Posted by Unknown on 1st Jun 2016

Our order arrived safely and well packaged. Now in a big pot because we know from previous experience it is not fully hardy if left in the ground over winter. This is a delightful plant which grows beautifully over summer and is full of dainty bright red would flowers. Bruise a leaf and smell the pineapple - delicious.

I'd seen this plant on a James Martin Home Comforts programme and looked for the plant on line... found your site. Plant arrived in great condition and look forward to trying the recipe soon. I'd recommend your site for quick delivery of great plants. I'll also be recommending the site to the local gardening club.
