Oregano 'Pizza herb' (Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum) Herb in 9cm Pot

Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum is also known as Italian or Greek Oregano an is considered the best all-purpose culinary subspecies, it is an extremely aromatic green herb, whose pungent flavour features heavily in Mediterannean and Latin-American food.

Growing 45-60cm tall and preferring light well-drained soil, Oregano prefers a sunny site and does not particularly enjoy prolonged wet winters, but its hardy nature in a sunny position it may be evergreen or semi-evergreen in areas with mild winters. The bright green oval leaves grow profusely on short purple/brown stems, and a very pretty show of pink/purple flowers appears in the summer.

Herb Usage

Native to the Mediterannean and Southern Europe, Oregano is closely related to marjoram, and is also characteristic of many Greek dishes (particularly lamb). Oregano's flavour is enhanced with drying and is often sprinkled liberally on pizzas. Its pungent flavour features heavily in Mediterannean and Latin American food and it has a great affinity for a variety of foods, especially strong flavours like wine, olives and tomatoes. It can also flavour vegetable, stuffing and egg dishes.

    Excellent plant, came in very good condition and is now thriving in the garden. The flavour appears to be good too.
